It seems that each time that I write the introduction for our newsletter, there is bigger and better news to share. Last newsletter I noted that we had had the biggest month in terms of flights in the history of Little Wings with 33 flights in the month of March. Well, this month we have done it again! 47 missions completed for the month of August, transporting 111 passengers from 23 families, including 11 new families whom we welcomed to the service. Big thanks goes to our operations team including our volunteer pilots and drivers for making this happen.
Speaking of volunteers, we are so proud and excited to announce that the Little Wings team has won the Volunteer Team of the Year Award for the Sydney Mid West region from the Centre for Volunteering. As a regional winner, the team will now go on to be finalists at the State Awards. We will keep you posted. Congratulations team!
As the year flies by and we enter into a new financial year I would like to share with you a short video we have prepared reflecting on Little Wings achievements for the 2015/16 year. It has been a big and successful year for Little Wings and we look forward to another great year ahead. You can view the video on our You Tube channel using the link below.
These great achievements, and the Little Wings service itself, could not exist without the strong support of corporates and community organisations. These past few months we have had the absolute pleasure of attending numerous grant cheque presentations, and in particular we would like to thank the following organisations for their generous donations –Transurban, Masonicare, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Slater and Gordon, Rotary, Lions Club, Sisters of Charity Foundation, as well as our corporate partners Hyundai Help for Kids and ClubsNSW.
We have also received substantial support from over 30 individual Clubs throughout NSW via the ClubsGRANTS Scheme. In total, Clubs this year have contributed over $200,000 to the Little Wings flight program. As we attend the various grant ceremonies across NSW we see just how much Clubs give back to their local community supporting an incredible number of well deserving charities performing fantastic work in their local community. Since the ClubGRANTS program began, Clubs have given away more than $1 billion in funding to various community groups, charities and sporting teams across NSW. We can not thank the Clubs enough for their support.
We have also seen some really inspirational fundraising by individuals, families and communities these past few months getting together to support Little Wings. Fundraising has come in all manner of ways, including running in the City to Surf, running a Half Marathon, completing an obstacle course with the family at the Little Big Dash, cutting long locks of hair off for charity, selling scrap metal, going Dry for July (ie. No alcoholic beverages for the month), as well as some unique charity fundraisers conducted by our regional friends including the Manila Team Penning competition, and sale of a lamb at the Dubbo show. We love how creative people are, and how they look for every opportunity to be able to raise funds for Little Wings. We encourage you to keep it up, we greatly appreciate your support! And as always if there is anything we can do to help you in your fundraising efforts we would love to assist.
Details of these fundraisers, as well as stories and photos of the families we help are regularly posted on our Facebook page. I encourage you to ‘like’ our Facebook page and share with your friends and family, so they can also join in and see the wonderful work of Little Wings.
Lastly, I would like to share with you some team updates. This month we welcome Kathie Stoker to the Little Wings team who has joined us as Flight Coordinator, we are pleased to have you on board. We also say a sad goodbye to Caroline Norman who has been with Little Wings for a number of years and has made a significant contribution in building important sponsor relationships, as well as our volunteer Grant Manager Gina Foong who has done a fantastic job in writing and submitting numerous grant applications for Little Wings. We wish you both all the very best for the future.
Regards, Richelle Koller, Managing Director
