4th December 2017

Dear [FIRST_NAME],

We are very excited to share the latest Little Wings newsletter with you, which highlights some of the work we have been doing in 2017.

We would like to thank you for your support of Little Wings which has meant since July 2017 we have been able to help 40 families with 133 transfers.  In this newsletter you will meet one of our Little Wings families who talks about their experience with our service, and how it has made a difference to them.

We have also included articles about some of our Little Wings supporters and volunteers, who without these people we would not be able to provide our service to NSW rural and regional families.

We wish you all the best for the remainder of 2017 and a very Merry Christmas from the Little Wings team.

Regards

Richelle Koller

Meet one of our Little Wings families, the Garlands and their daughter Ava

Kathy Garland’s life was turned upside down last year when her youngest daughter Ava was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Here, Kathy tells her story and about how Little Wings has helped her family through one of the toughest times of their lives:

"Ava was your typical happy, bubbly 3-year-old living on a farm between Forbes and West Wyalong with me, her dad (Andrew) and four big sisters. When she hadn't been feeling well for a couple of days and then turned a bit of a funny colour, I drove her 50km into Forbes to see a doctor. I had no idea what lay ahead.

By 1am the next morning, doctors had diagnosed Ava with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, and unfortunately it was 98% of her bone marrow.  By 4am Ava was admitted to the oncology ward and she commenced treatment later that morning.

I honestly don’t know what we would have done if Little Wings hadn't been there to help when we needed them the most. It was hard enough that our family was living apart for eight months. Ava and I would not have been able to get home at all and we would have seen very little of Andrew and the girls."

The Garland Family

Thank you to the Central West Tractor Trek for their amazing support of Little Wings

The Central West Tractor Trek has been running for 5 years and involves 20 teams of tractors driving through the Central West region to raise money for children suffering illness or disabilities.  This year, the tractors travelled for two days on a 220km round trip starting in Orange then visiting the communities of Cargo, Cudal, Lake Canobolas, Forest Reefs, Millthorpe and then back to Orange.

Little Wings has been working closely with families in this region since 2012, having helped 40 families and completing nearly 400 flights to and from Western NSW.  This year Central West Tractor Trek chose to support Little Wings, with all money raised by the tractor teams being donated to our charity.

The tractor teams all worked very hard to raise money for Little Wings with one team, ‘the ‘3 Molong Grannies’ raising most of their funds ($14,381) through the sale of homemade jam and cakes to the local community!

At the end of the two days the Trek was an outstanding success, raising $90,000 for Little Wings, which means we can now provide an additional 60 free flights for families in Regional NSW.

We would like to thank all the Tractor Trek teams for all of their incredible work.  We would also like to thank the Garland family and the Ferguson family, families of our Little Wings service from Western NSW, who came along to show their support for this wonderful event.

Little Wings volunteer Jim McArthur

Jim McArthur has been a key member of the Little Wings team.  He started as a volunteer driver for Little Wings in September 2015 and was instrumental in developing our Newcastle service.  Since that time he has volunteered over 100 driving hours safely transferring 14 Little Wings families to and from much needed specialist appointments at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital in Newcastle. Some of the families Jim has worked with came from as far away as Walgett and Collarenebri.

In the words of Jim:

"The time I have spent driving for Little Wings has been greatly rewarding with the knowledge that we have been able in a small way to ease the burden on the children and their families during their visits for specialist's appointments at John Hunter Hospital.  It provides a feeling of great purpose to know the anxieties of the families involved can be eased knowing they can be safely and swiftly transported from their remote locations to their specialist's appointments and with a minimum impact upon normal family life at home.  I know from my experience as a driver that families are relieved that they do not have to negotiate the busy streets of a large city such as Newcastle on their own after a long journey by car or public transport and appreciate the assistance given to them by our reliable Newcastle Little Wings team to deliver them to the front door of The John Hunter Hospital or their accommodation."

As well as driving families, Jim also went the extra mile looking after the Little Wings vans and drivers.  He took pride in washing and caring for our vans so they provided the most comfortable journey for each family during a difficult time.  He also trained new drivers who came on board and this helped us grow the number of volunteers we have available to support families in need.

We thank Jim for his service to Little Wings and wish him all the best for his future and relocation to Northern NSW.
